For today’s entry, we will be looking at a smashing 4 ‘draft’ phases for A Peace Of The Mountain! Woo! As we progress through these 4 draft stages, you will begin to see what the  composition process of ‘A Way of Composition’ looks like in finer detail, and for certain decisions, why I made the choices I made from a composer’s point of view.

Basic Editing Tools and Control Functions in DAWs

It’s not the ‘Door’ you’re thinking of, but a ‘DAW’.

A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is any type of application software that can be used for recording, editing, mixing, looping, playback, and producing dozens of audio and MIDI tracks at one time, as well as adding virtual effects and instruments, and triggering MIDI events.

What is MIDI?

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and is a system for musical instruments to communicate to each other.

Like a pianola, or a piano roll, a MIDI file contains information about what note to play, which is then sent out through a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to a sound source e.g. digital keyboard or synthesiser. For more information on DAWs, check out this blog post.
