MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and is a system for musical instruments to communicate to each other.
Like a pianola, or a piano roll, a MIDI file contains information about what note to play, which is then sent out through a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to a sound source e.g. digital keyboard or synthesiser. For more information on DAWs, check out this blog post.
